Strovolos Theatre, Nicosia
Initially this space, which seats 870 people, was intended by the client and the architects to serve mainly theatrical performances and other speech related events.
After Panacoustics' encouragement the space was transformed to accommodate both musical and theatrical events. For musical events the fire curtain with slight diffusing qualities transforms the space into a chamber music hall. Also the orchestra pit can be raised to stage level to accommodate up to 80 musicians.
With an average Reverberation Time of 1.6 seconds when the hall is empty, and an estimated RT of 1.3 seconds when the hall is occupied, this performing space is at the fine line where is satisfies both theatrical performance and chamber music requirements.
All walls were covered with white stone sound diffusers based on the Quadratic Residue Diffuser principle, thus achieving sound diffusion without the loss of low frequency sound absorption.
The theatre was completed in June 2003.
